Calculation Methodology & Standards

We believe calculator platforms should never hide their math. Here is the exact mathematical model used by Real Gravel Calculator.

1. Geometric Surface Area Formulas

  • Rectangle: Area = Length Γ— Width
  • Circle: Area = Ο€ Γ— RadiusΒ² = Ο€ Γ— (Diameter Γ· 2)Β²
  • Triangle: Area = 0.5 Γ— Base Γ— Height
  • Trapezoid: Area = [(Top Base + Bottom Base) Γ· 2] Γ— Height
  • L-Shape: Area = (Length_A Γ— Width_A) + (Length_B Γ— Width_B)

2. Three-Dimensional Volume Conversion

Depth in Feet = Depth in Inches Γ· 12

Base Volume (cu ft) = Surface Area (sq ft) Γ— Depth in Feet

Cubic Yards = Base Volume (cu ft) Γ· 27

Metric Volume (cu meters) = Cubic Yards Γ— 0.764555

3. Compaction & Waste Coefficient

Loose bulk aggregate shrinks under compaction. Our calculator applies the waste multiplier:

Recommended Order Quantity = Calculated Volume Γ— (1 + Waste Percentage Γ· 100)

4. Weight Conversion (US Tons & Pounds)

Weight is calculated by multiplying recommended order cubic yards by the laboratory loose bulk density (tons/ydΒ³):

US Tons = Cubic Yards Γ— Material Density (tons/ydΒ³) | Pounds = US Tons Γ— 2,000 lbs
